Year 4 are delighted to share with you our cross curricular project inspired by the life and work of Faith Ringgold, an African American, female artist and author.
Our current display is of our own ‘fibre art’, a title used by Faith to describe her own particular form of art, combining traditional quilting with storytelling. To create our work, we learnt some basic sewing skills - joining two pieces of fabric using running stitch as well as some embroidered embellishment. Our figures were created using Faith’s method of drawing and painting textiles. Before drawing the figures, we explored human proportions and sketched each other in flying poses.
In English, we created our own stories inspired by one of Faith’s books for children called Tar Beach. This also gave us the opportunity to touch on the subject of discrimination and segregation. After creating our narrative stories, we went on to research the life of Faith Ringgold and wrote our own biographies about her. She really is an inspirational woman to study!
We hope that you enjoyed reading our stories and biographies when we recently sent our books home and now we are pleased to be able to share our art work with you too.
