Today, Friday 13th June, we are all wearing yellow because it is Wear Yellow Day for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). We all brought in a donation for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust to help anyone with CF, but we went all out at Bridge because this year we have a new child in school who has CF – her name is Lucy.

Lucy’s Mum, Mrs Pinnington-Auld who works in our class, Maple taught us a lot about CF in our morning worship and we wanted to share what we learnt here.

If you don’t have CF your body has lots of water in it to flush out bad bacteria, but if you have CF instead of water, you have gluey glupe mucus which traps all the bacteria inside you and it takes you longer to get better. Mrs PA compared a glass of water with glitter (bacteria) to a glass of glue with glitter to show us what our bodies are like. Finley K

If you have CF as soon as you wake up in the morning, you have to do physiotherapy to get the mucus (glue) out of your body. Lucy has three options: she can bounce on a trampette for 15 minutes, or blow bubbles in a special machine, 50 times or blow into a machine a bit like an inhaler called a Rubica. I (Evie) had to come up on stage and blow into the Rubica – three blows and a pause 10 times and then two huffs and a cough. I (Ellis) had to blow into the bubble machine and it looked quite easy, but it was so much harder because you have to blow really hard to get the water bubbling up. We only did 16 blows and our cheeks felt numb. Lucy has to do it 50 times and if she coughs she has to do 30 more. Ellis J & Evie J

I thought it must be very tricky for Lucy, as on special days like Christmas, Easter or her birthday, she HAS to do physio before having any fun. It must also be hard for the rest of the family because everyone has to fit into Lucy’s schedule, especially big brother Frankie, who must be very patient. Noah T

This presentation taught us all about CF and how hard the whole family works to help keep Lucy healthy. Even though Lucy has CF, it doesn’t stop her from doing all the things we all do. She is the personification of FUN, not of CF.
