At Bridge & Patrixbourne CEP School, we are committed to nurturing every pupil’s growth and development within a loving Christian community. In line with our vision, we encourage our pupils to flourish through meaningful experiences. One exciting way we bring this to life is through our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, which enriches pupils’ playtime and supports their learning and wellbeing.

What is OPAL?

OPAL is a school initiative designed to make playtimes more engaging, creative, and active. It recognises that children learn best through play, and it encourages them to explore, interact, and develop crucial skills in a fun and natural way.

Our Goals with OPAL

Through OPAL, we aim to:

  • Create playgrounds that are more stimulating and enjoyable
  • Enhance physical activity, social skills, and cooperation among pupils
  • Reduce accidents and playground disputes, promoting a safe environment
  • Improve behaviour during playtimes and beyond
  • Foster a sustainable cultural shift that values high-quality play every day

Our commitment is to ensure every pupil experiences at least one hour of high-quality play daily, supporting their happiness, confidence, and growth in line with our core values of Service, Trust, Compassion, Generosity, and Forgiveness.

OPAL Activities at Our School

Pupils enjoy a variety of play types under OPAL, including:

  • Object play: Using everyday objects in new and imaginative ways
  • Communication play: Singing, miming, and socio-dramatic play that builds language and social skills
  • Rough and tumble play: Safe physical interactions that test strength and boundaries
  • Locomotor play: Activities involving running, climbing, chasing, and jumping

These activities allow pupils to practise and reinforce learning across many areas while feeling active, happy, and engrossed in their play.

Our OPAL Team

We are fortunate to have dedicated staff leading and supporting OPAL at Bridge & Patrixbourne CEP School:

  • Curricular Leads for Play: Mrs Harvey-Maw, Mr Taylor, Mr Wren
  • Play Coordinators: Mrs Pearman, Mrs Shirley
  • Parent Support: Mrs Pinnington-Auld
  • Play Governor: Mrs Ann Burges

Together, they ensure OPAL is embedded in school life and reflects our Christian ethos and commitment to each pupil’s wellbeing.

How We Are Bringing OPAL to Life

Our OPAL journey began in Term 5 of the 2024-25 academic year, with pupils now enjoying enriched playtimes across our spacious school grounds. Staff have received training to support this initiative, and the PTA has generously contributed resources to enhance play experiences.

This project is transforming how we think about play and enabling us to maximise the wonderful outdoor environment at Bridge & Patrixbourne. As pupils engage more deeply in play, they live out our vision by developing resilience, creativity, and excellence in a joyful, supportive community.

How You Can Help

Your support is invaluable in making OPAL a success! Here’s how you can contribute:

  • Resources: We welcome donations of unused toys and materials from home and garden to enrich our play areas. Watch for weekly OPAL newsletter updates detailing current needs.
  • Volunteering: We plan to build and set up new play areas and would appreciate help with building, painting, and other tasks. If you or someone you know can assist, please contact the OPAL team at opal.play@bridge.kent.sch.uk

Every contribution, big or small, helps us provide high-quality play opportunities that nurture our pupils’ growth and wellbeing.
