At Bridge & Patrixbourne CEP School, we are privileged to have extensive outdoor space, including a small woodland area dedicated to our Forest School programme. As a maintained primary school near Canterbury, we embrace the opportunity to enrich our pupils’ learning beyond the classroom walls, nurturing their growth in a natural environment aligned with our Christian values.

What is Forest School?

Originating from Scandinavia, where outdoor learning has been part of the curriculum since the 1950s, Forest School is a long-term, learner-centred approach that fosters development through practical, hands-on experiences in nature. Our Forest School sessions are carefully designed to give pupils the time and space to develop skills, interests, and understanding at their own pace.

Delivered by trained Forest School practitioners, this programme supports pupils in building independence, confidence, and self-esteem, all within the loving and supportive community inspired by Jesus’ teaching: “I am the vine, you are the branches.” This vision underpins how we grow together, nurturing creativity, resilience, and excellence in every child.

How Forest School Reflects Our Vision and Values

Our Forest School embodies the core values of Service, Forgiveness, Trust, Generosity, and Compassion. Pupils learn to care for the environment and each other, take supported risks, and develop trust in their abilities and their peers. Activities encourage generosity of spirit and compassion as children collaborate and share their discoveries.

The Six Principles of Forest School We Follow

We adhere to the six principles agreed by the UK Forest School community in 2011, ensuring a high-quality, impactful experience for all pupils:

  • Long-term and regular sessions: Forest School is an ongoing journey, not a one-off visit.
  • Natural environment focus: Sessions take place in woodland or natural settings to deepen pupils’ connection with nature.
  • Holistic development: We nurture resilient, confident, independent, and creative learners.
  • Supported risk-taking: Pupils are encouraged to take safe risks appropriate to their environment and abilities.
  • Qualified practitioners: Our sessions are led by trained professionals committed to continuous development.
  • Learner-centred community: We foster a supportive community where pupils lead their learning and growth.

Tailored Learning Experiences

Our Forest School programme is flexible and responsive, tailored to meet the evolving needs of our pupils as they grow in confidence and skills. Learning links to the National Curriculum and whole-school themes, with sessions offering freedom for exploration through multiple senses. While activities are child-led, we provide springboard activities inspired by each class’s topics, ensuring relevance and engagement.

How You Can Support Our Forest School

We warmly welcome support from our school community to enhance our Forest School resources:

  • Wood: If you have tree work planned, we would be grateful for donations of wood for activities.
  • Tools: Garden tools are always useful for practical learning.
  • Equipment: We aim to expand our activities using ropes and tarpaulins; any camping or outdoor equipment donations would be much appreciated.

Please contact the school office if you can help.
