Welcome to Term 3 Forest School with Year 5.

I love how creative this year group is - I might be putting out ideas and suggestions, but the children know exactly what interests them. Today we had children building dens, bird houses (including swings) and trying to reach pine cones in the pine tree.

Week one was very cold so we got the Kelly Kettle out to boil water and enjoy a warm squash. The children helped to make a small fire and practised how to use the fire strikers. Some of the children wondered if the ice would put the fire out and we set up a little experiment. Year 5 solved some riddles, talked about what makes them feel calm and what they are grateful for. They learned how to tie sticks together with square lashings, creating triangles, picture frames and mobiles.

One of our sessions had to be held indoors as the storm was too strong and it was not safe to be outside. We still learned about birds, made bird feeders, played bird bingo, played top trumps with trees and made wooden birds.

Over a fire, with lots of patience, children mixed their own dough and baked their own stick bread with flavours of their own choice. It is not a quick process but very rewarding. Hopefully you all received the recipe at home.

You can see what we were up to in the woodlands in a separate blog. During the last session, the sun came out and children could choose to make a small scale table, using laplanders, palm drills, knives, peelers and secateurs. Some chose to clear the wildflower meadow ready for spring, clear the flower beds and help bring up some more wood. that has kindly been donated to us.

Have a great Half Term!
