Welcome to the Forest Year 5.

Here is a little insight into what we have been up to. The weather forecast was cold but the winds were kind to us so we could go out on a winter's day.

We listened to the noises - the wind and the birds and we spotted some bird's nests which is easier in winter due to the lack of leaves. The first challenge was to create a journey stick as people used to do hundreds of years ago. The children practised their knotting skills by tying wool to their sticks. We walked around the forest, talked about the fact that there were lots of small branches on the floor because of the winter storms, collected pine cones from the pine forest and beech leaves from the deciduous trees.  Aidan noticed that it is was much darker under the evergreen pine trees due to needles compared to the bare beech trees.

Some found empty snail shells. flint stones, soft wood, fungi or slug eggs.

As it was also Maths day, the second challenge was to build a maze with sticks, remembering how to stay safe with sticks. This could either be a small bug size maze or a big one suitable for people. Children also chose what they wanted to do in their free time.

When I looked around, all children were really engrossed and engaged!
