Term 4 started off with learning all about birds. We played a game where they learned about camouflaging worms, we read the book Owl babies and acted the story out with puppets, they made bird feeders with cones, lard, toilet role and seeds, they created little and big birds nests and the children applied their learning by stamping on the ground like pecking birds in order to attract worms.
The weather was very spring like - wet, cold and muddy. We had a mud race, and started to create mud faces on trees. Some just enjoyed mixing mud and water together - Forest School is all about the process and not the end result.
I introduced our new slack line which runs between two trees and helps the children with their balancing skills.
We talked about the beginning of spring where night and day are the same length. Children found signs of spring in our area - feel free to venture out and search for bird's nests, insects, seedlings, buds and flowers etc. on walks when you go outside.
We read the book firey fox and practised the fire rules in preparation for our first real fire. The children also got to use palm drills with conkers to make necklaces and bracelets.
I watched children make puddles, build bridges, climb trees, learn about which clothes to wear and most importantly - have fun.
