In DT last term, Year 1 made moving Christmas cards. During their morning work with class teachers, pupils worked independently to explore and practise making  simple mechanisms - levers and sliders - that enable parts of their cards to move! A lever pivots around a split pin and can partially rotate part of the card. A slider allows a part of the card to travel left and right.

In their DT lessons, pupils planned and designed the front of their Christmas cards. They drew nativity scenes using inspiration from old Christmas cards and pictures. Pupils considered the composition, the characters and which part of their design would move. They then went on to make their card from collaged paper and to build the mechanism. The children evaluated their products before giving them to their families.
