Before Christmas, Year one watched a performance of The Storm Whale and The Storm Whale in Winter at The Marlowe Theatre. This term, they are reading the book The Storm Whale as part of their class project.

Throughout the term in art, pupils will be creating collage pictures inspired by the book. To start the project this week, they have been making the backgrounds using oil pastels and paint. As a class, we looked at photographs of rough seas before discussing Benji Davies’ (author and illustrator of The Storm Whale) depictions of the sea from his book. The children considered the colours and shapes they could use to create their own rough sea pictures (backgrounds) and mixed secondary paint colours (mainly green and a little purple). The results are very expressive. The children really enjoyed making them and some chose to create their own inspired work within their exploring time. I love them!
