Mark-making inspired by ‘Billy and the Beast’. 

 

This term, Year one have been reading the book ‘Billy and the Beast’, by author and illustrator Nadia Shireen. Within art, we looked at Nadia Shireen’s illustrations and as a class discussed how she used her marks and lines to describe texture.

 

Earlier this term, Year one explored mark-making using various tools found around the house. Within this project, pupils made marks with bamboo pens and ink while creating their own imaginary beast inspired by the book. Pupils learnt how to use and grip the bamboo pen; they explored art media (Indian ink, colour pencils and collage); described texture with their mark-making; practised their cutting skills and expressed their ideas creatively while having a lot of fun.

 

The children's imaginations were stretched further within English when pupils were asked to draw large-scale beasts in groups and label their features.
