Look what we have been up to in Forest School this term. Children learned about deciduous and evergreen trees, they made music with natural materials and performed with their bands that they formed. Some children chose to create musical instruments like Emersyn and Felix. Children used tapping and scraping techniques in order to make different sounds.Harriet managed to make a sound by blowing on a blade of grass and Jayla sang in her performance.
We found a bumble bee nest in the ground that they have built in a dug out out den (was it a badger or a fox?).
In the second session children made items from willow- they cut the rods from the home grown willow dome, learned about the properties and how to weave it. We saw nature gardens, crowns and hoops. This year we spotted a great amount of ladybird larvae on the willow leaves. As it was very hot, I froze some pine cones and sticks in ice and children used pipettes to defrost them. Some children like Lucy and Alice chose to make a raft and floated it on cool water.
I offered some clay and children used their creativity to show Forest School animals like ladybirds, hedgehogs and spiders. We raided the vegetable beds and children enjoyed learning about which plants are edible. We also had some fantastic rope climbers this term! As a treat we sprayed children with a water hose to keep cool - they are the days to remember.
Have a great summer holiday and enjoy nature!
