Last Thursday, after a long but luxurious coach trip, we landed with a ‘Big Bang’ outside The Science Museum in London. We were so excited that even gravity couldn’t keep us down.
During the day, we achieved lots of Spacetastic activities, including looking around the space exhibition with rockets and landing capsules dangling above our heads.
We attended an interactive space show, where we threw sticky balls (photons from the Sun) at different size umbrellas (solar sleeves). This demonstrated that the bigger the solar sleeve, the further it will travel into deep space.
After lunch, we launched straight into the Wonderlab, where we blasted around at the speed of light, trying out hands-on science activities. At one point there was a demonstration of our solar system on a rotating floor. The scientist explained that light from the sun takes eight minutes to reach Earth, so when we look into the sky we are looking back in time!
Finally, sitting in the IMAX in our 3D glasses, we watched images of our beautiful planet filmed from the International Space Station (ISS). We especially liked the contrasting night time images of North and South Korea. We felt so insignificantly small when we saw the size of Space from the ISS.
Our journey home felt as long as a mission to Venus! It was worth it, what an unforgettable day we all had and we learnt so much.
