Throughout term 3, Year 1 children worked towards the completion of their ‘Call Me Gorgeous’ collages inspired by the book by Giles and Alexandra Milton. The artworks consist of a background, midground and foreground.
The backgrounds depict a starry night. The children looked at photographs from the Hubble telescope when drawing shapes with wax crayons. They mixed their own secondary paint colours and worked expressively over the crayon learning about the wax resist technique. The midgrounds are paper shapes of leaves cut by the children.
Practising their observational drawing skills by drawing from photographs, Year 1 created their own mythical creatures using different parts of real animals – just like the animal in the book; these creatures became the children's foregrounds.
We talked about composition, layout and arrangement when sticking all the different components together to make a collage artwork.
The children really enjoyed making these and they now adorn the walls of of the school.
