This term, Year R pupils have been using two of their five senses to explore texture. We began by discussing what texture is and their knowledge and experience of it. We explored visual (implied) texture by looking at photographs of animal skins and fur and imaging how they would feel. We also felt the physical (actual) texture of a peacock feathers. Pupils were very keen to use their describing words within a class discussion.

We then went on to record texture by making wax rubbings and (relief) printing from animal pattern plates. It was also a great opportunity to recap on the primary colours and practise using tools such as rollers and paint brushes – great for their fine motor skills! Hurray! It was great fun.
