At the end of term 4 in art, Year R children continued to practise their gross and fine motor skills. The theme of the lesson was rainbows. We discussed what a rainbow is and when we might see one. We also looked at the colours in a rainbow and took time to discuss indigo and violet - colours they had not all heard of before.
Both the children and adults then warmed up their whole bodies, making sure that we all rolled our shoulders, stretched our arms and twisted from our waists. Concentrating on loop the loops, circles and arcs, pupils danced a routine to the song ‘somewhere over the rainbow’. Then, armed with crayons and white board pens (and a brief and eventful flirtation with slime) the children made loop the loop drawings. The children’s marks were smaller than in previous lessons, a natural progression as we move from gross to fine motor skills within art. The children also had the opportunity to practise their cutting and gluing skills when adding eyes to their creations.
Year R practise their gross motor skills every day at school. Gross motor skills are those using the children’s whole bodies. Practising specific movements strengthens muscles and helps children to become increasingly confident, agile and flexible. These skills are essential and must be obtained before going on to develop fine motor skills and learning to write and draw.
