Within their English lessons this term, Year 5 have been describing the characters Karl and Fritz from the book ‘Clockwork’ by Philip Pullman. To support their writing, pupils have been using these descriptions to inspire drawings of the characters in their Art lessons.
As a class, we looked at traditional German clothing and discussed the appearance and personality of the characters. Pupils initially drew them in soft pencil; they considered how to use tone within their drawings; decided where a light source would be and where shadows would be cast. The children then tried using dip pen and ink – the media used for the book’s illustrations by Peter Bailey. They experimented with different types of line to describe textures and different tones (for example cross hatching and the clustering of lines together to make darker tones) before drawing over the pencil lines of their illustrations. Descriptive words used within their English lessons were written on their ‘eerie’ backgrounds. A spooky use of tone for a spooky book!
