In Term 5 Reception children showed us that they were ready for their first campfire - we practised how to get close, how to light the fire and how to stay safe. The children toasted marshmallows on sticks and enjoyed their first s'mores. We spoke about the fire triangle - a fire needs fuel, heat and oxygen in order to burn. Some children experimented with the fire strikers and lit their own fires- it really isn't easy!
We looked for nibbled leaves and wondered which insect had eaten it. We acted out the lifecycle of a butterfly and planted potatoes, seeds and bushes. Some children chose to make faces from mud and natural materials, they explored the mound and had time to express themselves, chat to friends and explore the area.
We invited parents in for our third session this term and they turned up in the rain. The weather did help us with our challenge to find worms which they added to the home-made wormery. The children learned an insect song, made snails from log slices and clay and created caterpillars from leaves. Thank you all for coming to see our lovely nature area and for joining your children on their discovery journey. Have a great half term.
