Science Week at Bridge School started with some very excited children attending an assembly on Monday morning in the school hall led by Miss Astin and Dr Nelson from The King’s School, Canterbury who also run Saturday Smarties as part of the Canterbury Primary Science Partnership.
The children were introduced to the theme of the week, Our Diverse Planet.
Miss Astin showed some optical illusions to emphasis the point that we can’t always trust our senses and that is why we need science to gather evidence.
The children then explained their perceptions of ‘What a scientist looks like’, the children gave typical answers associated with a ‘stereotypical’ scientist: male, 50 years old, wears a white coat and works in a laboratory. The children were then introduced to a range of scientists who don’t conform to this stereotype.
With help from some willing participants, there were demonstrations of a series of experiments that children can also try at home!
Throughout these experiments, children (and adults) were asked to observe and question what they were seeing. There were definitely a lot of WOW moments through the assembly culminating in an experiment where a bucket of water was swung upside down over Miss Austin’s head!
The children had an excellent time and it was an incredible way to kick off Science Week at Bridge School. Thank you so much to Miss Astin and Dr Nelson from The King’s School.
