Today Year 5  have been scientists investigating properties of materials. We wanted to find out which material was the best thermal conductor. The children were given a list of equipment they had access to and then they were tasked with planning an experiment that would provide an answer to our question.

“I enjoyed the experiment and it was nice to see the butter melt on the metal spoon first. I also learnt that metal is a great thermal conductor.”

“In our group we didn’t really see anything happen during the experiment. It was only at the end when we took the butter off of the spoons that we realised that the butter on the metal spoon was the softest.”

There was a mixture of successful and unsuccessful experiments and we reflected upon this, commenting on what we would do differently if we were to carry out the experiment again.
