Last week there was a definite buzz about Science around the school! A whole school investigation was set called ‘Table Top Glaciers’ where children had to investigate what happened to an ice cube when it came into contact with water of different temperatures. This linked well to a discussion with the children about climate change and the changes that are happening to glaciers. Year 6 set the school the challenge of measuring each child in a class so they could work out the average height in each year group. We are looking forward to finding out the results. The children in Beech Class and Year 4 took part in an exciting experiment about DNA with Emily from Kent College. The children learnt how to extract DNA from strawberries and kiwis. There were a lot of excited faces when the children spotted the DNA in the test tube. Fifteen children from Year 5 went to the Science Jamboree at the Sandwich Discovery Park where the children took part in different workshops before ending their morning by watching a science show. There were lots of other exciting experiments happening around the school Year 2 enjoyed making some mini explosions and Year 3 learnt all about how different rocks are formed using chocolate! Below are some quotes from the children:

“Extracting DNA from the fruit as it was really interesting as I didn’t know fruit had DNA.” Year 3

“My favourite part was the lunch bag experiment because I liked mixing two materials together to see what happens.” Year 2

“Enjoyed the glue stick and ice cube activity – liked making predictions and finding out results.” Year 6

Science Week 2025

“When we did the investigation with the ice cubes because we wanted to discover whether the temperature of water affect the speed in which ice cubes melt because I liked learning about climate change and about this affect the animals and eco systems.” Year 5
