Last week, Year R continued to practice and develop their gross motor skills within their art lessons by taking part in their weekly Write Dance activities. These sessions aim to strengthen muscle groups and improve the children’s agility.
The theme was The Sea. We warmed up with some swimming moves and then went on to dance to a sea shanty. Working on large-scale paper on the walls using chalk, the children drew arc shapes, curves and waves. They also worked into white paint with their fingers and got very messy.
Gross motor skills are those using the children’s whole bodies. Practising specific movements strengthens muscles and helps children to become increasingly confident, agile and flexible. These skills are essential and must be obtained before going on to develop fine motor skills and learning to write and draw.
