Year 4 stepped back in time this week as Ian from KIC Theatre brought the world of the Mayan Civilisation bursting into life. The hall was soon filled with mime, movement and plenty of imagination as the children acted out scenes from Mayan life — everything from hardworking farmers and fierce warriors to clothes-makers and shelter-builders. They worked brilliantly in teams, pairs and individually… and may now be convinced they’d survive quite well in an ancient rainforest!
Alongside the drama, the children picked up some brilliant facts. For example, the Mayan king painted his face black to stand out — talk about making an entrance — and his headdress could be as tall as he was! They were also fascinated to learn that the Mayans drank cacao, the pure ancestor of today’s chocolate, thousands of years ago. Safe to say, that fact got their full attention.
Back in class, Year 4 wrote about their experience and created colourful posters to showcase what they had learnt. A huge thank you to KIC Theatre for helping bring history to life in such a memorable way.
