Year 3 were some of the first lucky children to explore the newly opened pond. We talked about how to stay safe and how to look after animals and plants. We already saw quite a few animals that have moved in - waterboatmen, dragonflies and water beetles.
Year 3 went on a nature scavenger hunt to look closer at what grows and lives around us. Some children chose to make turmeric sun prints, where the chemicals reacted to the sunlight. Year 3 built lots of fairy houses, they picked tomatoes and took part in a mud and spoon race.
We spoke about the properties of a willow tree and children could choose to craft with willow - they made hoops, fishing rods, crowns, wands, bows and arrows etc.
Year 3 also learned the difference between compound and simple leaf structures, they used mallets, fabric and plants to print (Hapa Zome the ancient Japanese art of printing) and Year 3 really enjoy a music and drama performance at the end of the session.
We made a fire and cooked apple tea with water, apples, cinnamon and star anise.
Year 3 went on a nature rainbow hunt and they explored an Egyptian theme, linking to their classroom learning; making shadufs, re-creating the river Nile and pyramids, making clay amulets and printing Egyptian symbols.
Lucy was so kind to bring in a fox skull that we could all look at and observe. Some children made leaf lanterns and our ever popular conkers came out for craft and exploration. Our new bamboo guttering was very popular, especially on a rainy day! So much nature connection was going on - it was fabulous to watch!
