On Wednesday, our Year 5 pupils enjoyed a very special visit to the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury to hear the Philharmonia Orchestra perform as part of the orchestra’s 80th anniversary celebrations.

In the weeks leading up to the trip, the children explored some of the composers whose music they would hear during the performance. They also learned the words to a song called I Am Music, which they proudly performed alongside pupils from other schools. During the concert, the children sang and signed the chorus together with the orchestra — a truly memorable moment.

Back in school, pupils also responded creatively to music through art, producing work inspired by Bizet’s Carmen: Toreador Song. This helped deepen their understanding of how music can inspire emotion, storytelling and creativity.

The highlight of the experience, however, was seeing the children completely absorbed in the performance. They demonstrated excellent theatre etiquette, sang and signed beautifully in time with the orchestra, and represented the school brilliantly throughout the visit.

It was a wonderful cultural experience and one that both pupils and staff will remember for a long time.

A special thank you goes to Mrs Loughlin and Mrs Smith. We are incredibly fortunate to have such talented staff who always embrace the additional opportunities offered to Year 5 with enthusiasm and a smile.
