World Book Day at school this year looked a little different, and it was a huge success. Instead of dressing as book characters, children came to school dressed as words. The creativity on display was fantastic and we are very grateful for the imagination, effort and support shown by both children and families.

The day began with a whole school worship where Year 5 pupils shared their chosen words and their definitions with the rest of the school. It created a real buzz in the hall and set the tone for a day focused on language, vocabulary and the joy of reading.

Across the school, classes took part in a wide range of activities celebrating books and words.

In EYFS, the children loved helping to create their costumes and were very excited to show them off. They enjoyed having their photos taken and talking about their words. Stevie proudly shared that he was radiation and Finley chose solar system. It was wonderful to see the children discovering and discussing new vocabulary.

In Year 1, both Rowan and Willow classes had a fantastic day. Rowan Class recreated the front covers of their favourite books from the class book corner and designed colourful bookmarks to support their reading. Willow Class focused on fairy tales, taking part in a Nick Sharratt illustration workshop before designing their own bookmarks. In the afternoon they retold stories such as The Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and The Three Little Pigs through group performances. Photographs of the children with their “word for the day” are now displayed in the corridor, sparking lots of discussion.

In Year 2, pupils created plaques displaying their chosen words before working together to build a class dictionary by using their words in sentences. They also spent time reading together and discussing interesting vocabulary from the books they explored.

Year 3 enjoyed a creative day. Beech Class watched a play about Anansi, used dictionaries to find word meanings and created illustrated word posters before photographing them outside. Chestnut Class watched The Magic Finger from the National Theatre, made bookmarks, designed book covers and used a thesaurus to find alternative vocabulary before creating a class word cloud.

In Year 4, pupils explored storytelling through drama. After watching part of the National Theatre production of Peter Pan, they acted out scenes from Escape from Pompeii, taking on roles such as traders, market holders and boat captains. They re-enacted the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and created posters to visually represent the meaning of their chosen words.

In Year 5, pupils shared their words during worship, took part in an online book quiz and later created a graffiti wall to showcase their new vocabulary.

We are also extremely grateful for the generous donations of non-fiction books for the library. A special thank you goes to our Year 6 pupils, who organised and ran the book sale brilliantly. Together we raised £138.65, which has been shared with Pilgrims Hospice in return for a new selection of fiction books for our school library.

A fantastic day celebrating vocabulary, creativity and the joy of reading.
